  • Rules from the BABY’s Book on Becoming a Billionaire

    • Rule #129: Life is 24/7, and the entrepreneurial mind set is never rewarded on an hourly basis.

  • Better to beg forgiveness. Trump Watch: The Donald installs a flag pole without a permit.

  • Berried by the Boss. A new legal sham argues that hourly workers must be paid if they use their Blackberries or cell phones after work.

  • Losing sleep over counting sheep? Rocky Smolin asks how to effectively market software that evaluates sleep problems and offers behavioral solutions.

  • Racing to register. With seed financing from Lance Armstrong, Jim Woodman started Active.com, to simplify athletic event registration for both organizers and athletes.

  • Answering to Angels. Attorney Peter Townshend contends that angel investors are conducting extensive due diligence before committing funds to start-up businesses.

Jim Woodman started The Active Network in 1998 and moved to San Diego when Active merged with a local competitor. Still privately held, Active remains profitable and generates about $70 million a year in revenues. The company raised $52 million, survived the dot-com bust, and is now the leading web site for athletic event registrations. Prior to starting Active, Jim was the editor and publisher of a Florida sports magazine that grew to 120,000 in circulation. His sports resume includes selection to the U.S. Olympic Festival for water polo, “Top 100” finisher at the Hawaii Ironman and numerous top three overall triathlon finishes.

Peter Townshend, Partner, Allen Matkins, specializes in representing emerging technology companies and venture capitalists. His clients span many industries including software, wireless, semiconductors, medical devices and biotechnology. He received his J.D. degree from the University of California, Boalt School of Law, Berkeley, and a masters in business administration degree from the University of California Haas School of Business, Berkeley.

Rocky Smolin is the co-founder with Rubin Naiman, Ph.D., of The Sleep Advisor, a doctor-designed expert software system that evaluates your sleep using the same methods that sleep specialists employ. You can use The Sleep Advisor in the comfort and privacy of your own home and get immediate results, including a personalized sleep analysis and comprehensive recommendations for improving your sleep health.
