Debi Akin is the co-founder and co-owner of D.Z. Akin’s, one of San Diego’s most popular
restaurants. She and her husband started the restaurant-deli 27 years ago in
1,600 square feet in La Mesa. Since then, it has expanded to 10,000 square feet
and in addition, it operates a successful catering business. Akin also finds
the time to serve as a volunteer business counselor for SCORE (link to
www.score.org), a national organization affiliated with the U.S. Small Business
Administration to provide pro bono business advice and support to entrepreneurs
David Graff, Brian Kaiser and John Wirtz won first place in San Diego State University’s Venture Challenge business
plan competition which drew 20 universities from around the world. The three
represented the University of Nebreska, Lincoln. Their company-- Agile Sports
Technologies (link to: www.agilesportstech.com)-- is building a software
platform for collegiate and professional athletics.
Rebecca Dolan, a San Diego Girl Scout, has sold over 8,000 boxes of Girl
Scout cookies during her seven year Girl Scout career. About 200 million boxes
were sold nationally this year, of which two million were purchased in San
Diego where about 15,000 girls participate. In 2002, the local chapter started
Operation Thin Mint which allows consumers to buy boxes that are sent overseas
to our military. On May 12, the Girl Scouts will celebrate sending their one
millionth box. The event is being held at the U.S.S. Midway at 9:30 a.m.
