Climb the Ladder or Build Your Own?
By Barbara
With few women at the top of major corporations, many women are asking themselves this important question, and an article in the September issue of More magazine featured a debate between Carol Bartz, executive chairman of Autodesk, and Margaret Heffernan, a professor of entrepreneurship at Simmons School of Management in Boston. Heffernan contended that many women opt out of corporate America in desperation and because they feel that their individuality is dying. On the other hand, Bartz argued that more women can rise to the top if they promote themselves more, and she added that perhaps they’re a bit too idealistic and self-righteous. Yikes! I hope women don’t lose their idealism. It’s corporate America’s loss if talented women strike out on their own. The large companies that offer women and men more flexibility and options will have a competitive edge.

Did the author mention if women dropped out of corporate america more so than men for those reasons? Or is it disproportionately women? Is it really "individuality" or just more flexible working conditions that are mom-friendly? Or just to get out of the old boy's club atmosphere?
