  • Rules from the BABY’s Book on Becoming a Billionaire

    • Rule #152: Don't be afraid to embrace the mantra: Less can often be more except in the case of Parmesan cheese on Caesar salad.

    • Rule #291: Since there are no doors on cubicles, never trade stock or cash for a bigger business card.

  • Teaming up for trouble. Today's management gurus have incited an "epidemic of cooperation" with tremendous focus on team activities, meetings, and communication which, according to Kevan Hall, may actually impede a productive and efficient workplace.

  • (S)He's an angel. As the number of women technology entrepreneurs increases, the number of women who are comfortable entering the traditionally male-dominated area of angel investing is also increasing, says Connie Koch, Keiretsu Forum Southern California.

  • Touch all bases and score. Communicate regularly with service providers, including accountants and attorneys, to avoid striking out in the success game with costly mistakes, advises Sue Watson, LevitZacks, in our Ask the Expert segment.

  • Just don't call me "stupid." Rewarding employees with embellished titles is nonsense—titles won’t improve skills nor pay bills

  • Working the whatchamacallits: Studies show consumers typically purchase technology products for features instead of function (known as “feature creep”) resulting in higher service requirements and lower overall satisfaction.

Connie Koch is the president of Keiretsu Forum Southern California. Sue Watson, Chief Operating Officer of LevitZacks CPA’s, is the most recent addition to the leadership team. After working with the Levitzacks’ team as a client for the past 20 years, Watson stepped to the other side of the desk and became the COO in February 2007. Watson successfully led San Diego’s largest locally owned ground transportation provider for four years, taking that entity from a stagnant position in the market to a blossoming enterprise, ultimately leading to its sale to an international transportation giant. Prior to that, Watson worked with one of San Diego’s local venture capital funds as their CFO for 13 years. That position allowed her to participate in more than 30 merger and acquisition transactions, providing her with the experience of working with all phases of an entity’s lifecycle from start-up through disposition.
